A carbon removal credit represents one tonne of CO2 removed and stored on a net basis, after accounting for project emissions. Buyers should check the verification records, storage commitment and registry entry behind it.

Capturing CO2 from a fossil fuel facility prevents new emissions. Carbon removal takes CO2 out of the atmosphere. Direct air capture with storage and BECCS can deliver removal because the captured carbon comes from the air, directly or through plants.

Storage duration varies from decades to thousands of years. Forests and soils need ongoing protection or management, while mineral and geological storage generally carry lower reversal risk. Check the duration and safeguards behind each project.
